Veivauceva Settlement residents a step closer to obtaining land lease
Minister for Housing Premila Kumar revealed that last year government received the developers lease for Veivauceva Settlement.
During her visit to the informal settlement she highlighted that for any informal settlement, their only one wish is to get the title for their land, and the Fiji Government understands that.
“So the first step in the process, when government wants to develop any informal settlement is first to acquire the development lease. In order to get the developers lease 60 percent of the “Mataqali” or Land Owning Unit has to agree to the lease, 40 percent don’t agree that allowed but 60 percent must agree that they want to give the land for community use or government use or for whatever purpose.”
Kumar says government has so far secured 48 development leases for informal settlements adding that the Housing Ministry is trying to secure more leases to enable the formalization of informal settlements.
