Hunt on for investors

She said the complex would have supermarkets, a barber shop, small and micro enterprise (SME) markets as well as dental and medical facilities.

Mrs Kumar also said the ministry was developing a new two-storey Raiwaqa market complex at the present informal market site.

“The bottom floor will have produce, mainly fruits, vegetables and root crops, on the top floor we intend to have smaller stalls for vendors such as SMEs,” she said.

Mrs Kumar said anything sold in the market had to be Fijian made.

“The last thing we want to do is encourage people to come to the market to sell grocery items which supermarkets sell.

“If they are making sweets, handmade sweets or homemade sweets, we will allow them to sell those from the SME markets.”

She said the ministry would have strict criteria as to what they would and would not allow people to sell.

“In this whole Raiwaqa area, we do not have too many supermarkets. The only supermarket close to the area is situated at Damodar City and we all understand the traffic congestion out there.

“This will be another place where people can come and do their shopping.”

She said construction of the market should commence next month or early January next year.
